Liverpool beat Besiktas 8-0 last night. A Champions League match. Does this mean they’ll be over-confident to play us next week, or in an unstoppable groove?
In a search for clues, I looked up the last three teams to score seven in a Champions League game. Here’s what happened in the two games after the hammering:
Tue. 23 Arsenal 7 – 0 Slavia Prague UEFA Champions League
Sun. 28 Liverpool 1 – 1 Arsenal 44,122 English Premier League
Wed. 31 Sheff Utd 0 – 3 Arsenal 16,971 English Carling Cup
Tue. 10 Man Utd 7 – 1 Roma UEFA Champions League
Sat. 14 Watford 1 – 4 Man Utd 37,425 English FA Cup
Tue. 17 Man Utd 2 – 0 Sheff Utd 75,540 English Premier League
Wed. 10 Juventus 7 – 0 Olympiakos 12,500 UEFA Champions League
Sun. 14 Juventus 4 – 0 Parma 31,738 Italian Serie A
Sun. 21 Lecce 1 – 1 Juventus 30,325 Italian Serie A
No obvious falloff is there? If a team can score seven in a big European game it’s a fair assumption that they’re playing pretty well. Oh well.
