Sepp Blatter does not approve!

Blatter delivered a withering critique of Scudamore’s plan, describing it as unacceptable, hypocritical and claiming that to go ahead would bring football into disrepute. “This is definitely abuse of association football,” Blatter said. “The Premier League says it is the best league in the world but then it should act with more responsibility.

“To try and have additional exposure and revenue by expanding the league around the world, I think this is not acceptable. It will not be acceptable to the Fifa executive committee, I am sure. We have already heard from two presidents of confederations [Uefa's Michel Platini and Asia's Mohamed bin Hammam] and, if I went through the different press coverage, I have not seen a lot of support.”

Excellent.

Paul Kelso in the Grauniad.

Harry Pearson in same.

All good stuff.  The sooner this nonsensical idea is put to bed the better.

  2. As is your right, of course. But if I may get up on my high horse for a moment… There.

This is very serious and as I said before, I’d join protests, boycott matches (all of them for a season if a good chunk of the football following public would do the same, if this is what it takes to get the powers that be to pay attention), whatever it takes. The greed has gone too far.

  3. Personally I don’t understand why they don’t just expand the league to 21 teams. While I’m not a fan of games played abroad, if we’re going to have it why not make it fair. Each team should play every team twice only. The fact that one team will have to play ManU or Arsenal or Chelsea three times is awful.

  4. The powers that be claim that they are doing this in order to be proactive and protect the “smaller” clubs. Now my question is, can the big 4 just jaunt off and play a premiership match overseas? Is there really and truly a danger of that? Or is this protect-the-small-clubs talk a bunch of fluff in order to justify the overseas matches? Either way, I agree with wmc. The greed needs to be curtailed.

  5. Sepp Blatter opposing it almost makes me want to support it.
