Long ramble about chance, probability, randomness, etc. Not for everyone! Or anyone perhaps….

A big point of discussion this year has been the role of luck in Fulham’s season. We won’t rehash individual events here - that’s been done too often - but I would like to explore the role of randomness in football a little more. Forgive this tangent; it’s something I’m interested in, and here is as good a place as any to start.

What does it take to become a professional footballer?

Well, our very own Moritz Volz tries to answer that question. He explains it’s more than talent, here in this Times Online article. Great stuff and I especially appreciate his comments about those that have made it to the top, and he has no idea how. I mean really, haven’t we all experienced this in our own lives. The kid who always seemed to make the club or school team and get the nod ahead of you, even though he was s*#t. Or the boss who you’ve no idea how he got the job as anyone of your coworkers could do better. Well, Volzy says it’s the same as a pro footballer.

At the other end of the spectrum there are those who seem to have made it in spite of their ability rather than because of it. I’d be lying if I claimed I’d never come up against players who’ve left me wondering how they manage to get paid to play. I won’t name names, but “couldn’t hit a barn door” doesn’t even come close.
