Rats again
It’s been a terrible day so far. I was up and out at 6, early but not punishingly so. On the walk between South Wimbledon tube and Wimbledon Station my back went again, then my iPod stopped working. Luckily the train was quiet. I usually use my iPod to shut out the noise from others’ iPods. It’s a bit weird when you put it like that.
Early mornings are funny, you think you’re wide awake but then look back later on and it’s all a blur. This morning, for instance, there were half a dozen half-naked girls on the train, 19-20 I imagine, dressed in a St Trinian’s type garb, with mud smeared on their faces, and their shirts deliberately ripped up. They got off at Surbiton. Where were they going, I wonder, at that time? I type this now and wonder that they didn’t capture my attention more than they did. I had my sore back though, and was grumpy, and, well, best to keep your eyes to yourself anyway, right? Maybe they didn’t exist at all. Maybe all this red bull I drink has gone to Another Level.
Then at work everything’s fine but there’s a lot to get through. I bought some Worcester Sauce crisps from the vending machine, bent down to retrieve them from the dump bit, then smashed my head on the bar we have in our canteen on the way back up. So I volleyed a nearby wall in anger and made a satisfying dent. It could’ve been my foot that lost the battle, but the wall is cheaply made and gave way enough to spare me. Thanks, wall. Concrete bollards are less forgiving. So I suppose things could be worse.
All of which brings us to the weekend. We could wonder what might happen, but frankly anything at all could happen. We’re 2:1 underdogs *on paper*, but really the formbook and the laws of good sense can be ignored at times like these. All we can do is make noise and hope the players do the business.
Here we go then. Toby’s bringing his inflatable woggle again. If you see it, say hello.
many of us on this side of the water are wishing they could be part of the Fulham traveling crazies for this match, or to gather at the Cottage for the live feed. Over on the FulhamUSA board there’s already live match TV parties arranged in Atlanta, NYC, Boston, and possibly in Ohio, Denver, and California as well. There’s a tremendous amount of will in effect here, all of it directed towards the south coast and 11 players representing all of us. It’s Friday morning here in South Texas, about 46 1/2 hours before kickoff and I’m finding it hard to concentrate on anything else.

Hey where is the Fulham viewing party in NYC? I couldnt find it on the FulhamUSA board.
You must really have been in bad shape not to notice half-naked 20 year old women! :) It’s days like these that make me think of your prior post on how we slog through our jobs during the week so we can get to the Saturday football match and enjoy the catharsis.
I’m like you Don, I’m finding it hard to focus. All I can think about is, will I be in a great mood on Mother’s Day? Will we maintain our form and stick it to Pompey? Will Pompey sit back and perhaps play with less intensity given their upcoming FA cup final?
My outlook is cautiously optimistic. We have a great run of form going, we have everything to play for and this match is fairly meaningless for Portsmouth. At the same time, our away record stinks and Portsmouth is a tough opponent. Thankfully we won’t be relying on Sanchez’s longball tactics against a team that outsizes us in nearly every position. That should at least give us a better chance.
Come on you whites!
ive been backing fulham all season, seen about 90% of their games, except for the last two weeks. ive made honest attempts to wake up for the games (7 A.M. for us on the U.S. West Coast), but with late friday nights sometimes its hopeless.
its nice to wake up to the good news, so this sunday im not breaking ritual, im gonna sleep in. sports psychology of fans is really dumb sometimes for us superstitious ones, but I always say why take a chance and ruin a good thing. :D
gl fulham
Nelson, good luck to you. But would it not be better to sleep in front of the TV or something? I doubt I’ll sleep at all on Saturday night. It’s going to be horrific.
There will be a few assembled at the Sweetwater Bar on Sunday at noon to watch in St. Paul.
jgoldman; the venue is Nevada Smith’s. The thread is entitled: “NYC; Fulham v. Pompey, Nevada Smith’s” Go to the FUSA home page and look in the left hand column for that thread.
BC; glad I’m not alone. I’m even teasing our most passionate LA Laker fan just to see the fireworks. Must focus; must focus.
The only other thing in our favor that hasn’t been mentioned is that Pompey have not been dominant this season at home. If they hadn’t won 9 away matches, their average home form would probably have them in the bottom half.
As a member of the Boston game watch crew, I can atest that there’s nothing better than eggs and Fulham! Please let my morning be over easy and not scrambled. My stomach is in knots. COME ON YOU KICK ASS WHITES!!!!!!
Rich,
Sorry to hear that you were having such a tough day (it probably got worse after Southend’s scoreless draw at home against Doncaster), but I would rather it was today rather than Sunday.
Believe it or not, I’m going to ignore everything until the delayed coverage starts on Setanta. It’s going to be an agonizing 2 hr wait, but I really want to watch the match w/o knowing the result. I guess that I’ll try to pass the time watching Watford - Hull on DVR.
Brian,
I really wish i could join you at the Clearwater but I have a Mother’s Day lunch at noon in Buffalo. Damn. My sister doesn’t have Setanta either. I have been feeling a little anxious all week long knowing there is no way i can see the game, or even follow along with a match tracker or something. I will have to tape the game and keep my composure away with the family.
Just an FYI to any US fans out there, it looks like Setanta is broadcasting the Fulham game LIVE on Setanta Extra. This is channel 670 on Directv. Cheers.
Thanks Adam, I am going to post something on this soon. I’ve got my feelers out and am trying to figure out who may be showing the game in the Twin Cites. If you remember, the game we watched at The Local last fall was on Extra but they also had issues getting the thing on the sets until about half way through the first half. Sweetwater will not be carrying the game live but am working on The Local and Brits.
Adam - Awesome, I just saw that this AM. It sometimes takes 5-10 mins for the match to come on that channel which drove me nuts when we played at Everton. I actually had to call DirecTV and complain.
Just confirming that in the Twin Cites, The Local will be showing the Fulham game live at 9:00 a.m. CST.
As Hatterdon said, there are watch parties being set up all over the U.S. Please visit FulhamUSA at this link to see one that may be in your area.
