I wanna be sedated

Posted in General by weltmeisterclaude on May 10th, 2008

It was Victory Day in Ukraine on Friday, celebrating the end of the second world war. Hade’s friend Jack has been out there for a while, working as a teacher and getting a different perspective on things. In the end the many, many cultural differences wore her down, and she has decided to leave Kiev after an interesting but bewildering few months. Her new job is in Qatar. That’s another pretty big step if you ask me, and I really admire her for taking it. There are jobs she could do in England I’m sure, or somewhere a little closer to England, but no, Jack’s going for it. She might regret it or it might turn out to be the best thing she ever did. More than likely there’ll be elements of both, but it’s living isn’t it?

I don’t think I could do what Jack’s doing, I don’t even know if Jack can do what Jack’s doing, but she’s giving it a go anyway and while most of our days and weeks and years blur into each other, she’ll always remember 2007 and 2008.

So will we. Football comes, football goes, and every August here we are again, hoping, expecting, then gradually finding our bearings and working out where we fit into this silly food chain. This year has been odd. How can it be explained? It was first enigmatic, then awful, and now surging towards heights we haven’t seen for a long, long time. These last three wins may be the most thrilling things any of us will experience for a while: that incredible day in Berkshire; the improbable comeback in Manchester; and the thoroughly delirious home win against Birmingham. We needed to win every one of them, and we did. And now tomorrow is hard to even contemplate. It really is unfathomable. We’ll always remember 2007/08 though.

Good luck, all.

    Did everyone sleep well?
As this is the most erudite of footy websites and my name is Red - a quote from Gramsci sums up my feelings this morning:

Pessimism of the intellect and oprtimism of the heart.

    I slept terribly.

Nice quote, Red S: feel free to keep them coming through the year.

    Here we go then…

This is it then. Just seen Rich (and possibly Toby - difficult to tell due to the mexican hat & ‘tache) interviewed on Setanta.

Fingers Crossed - Come on you Whites!!!

Based on the pictures I have seen here at CCN I believe that is Toby who has been all over the TV with his hat and woggle and now at the end he has a big ass smile with him too!

Any info on whether Fulham have qualified for the UEFA cup based on the fair play table- as well as staying up on an incredible day ?!?

I know Man City picked up a red and a yellow today, and it was very close before that.

I thought that was a good omen when I saw the Rich, Toby, etc on the pregame.

What a result and finish to the season. I’m absolutely exhausted. I practically stood for the whole match which is a bit odd when you do it in front of the TV in your den.

    A fantastic day!!!

    YankatOxford,

You’re right, I hadn’t even focused on the Fair Play table. That would be amazing.

I can’t begin to know how the UEFA Fair Play spot will sort itself out. But according to this site, here are the rules.

    http://www.premiershiplatest.com/news/man-city-fulham-west-ham-utd-amp-wigan-a-5510216.html

So City had 299.8 points going in and Fulham had 297.8.

    1. Yellow and Red cards: If no cards are shown the score will be 10. For every yellow card will deduct this total by 1 point. A red card will cost a team 3 points in the ranking. If the red card is the result of a second yellow card the deductions of the two yellow card will be ignored. But if a player gets a direct red card after he got a yellow card earlier, the yellow card will be counted as a deduction. This score could become negative.

Fulham was next in line behind Man Cit. (See the link, there were actually other teams closer but they actually made qualification for Europe so Fulham is next in line)

    Man City 299.8 + 10 -3 (red card) -1 (yellow card) = 305.8

    Fulham 297.8 + 10 (no cards given out) = 397.8

But then there are so many other factors to add in which quite frankly are a bit subjective. But with the good behavior of both team and fans today, I would say that we might have a very good chance of winning this.

    2. Positive play: For positive play a team can score a maximum of 10 points and a minimum of 1 point.

    3. Respect to the opponent: (e.g. returning the ball to the opponent at a throw-in) maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

    4. Respect to the referee: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

    5. The behaviour of the team officials: maximum 5 points, minimum 1 point.

    6. The behaviour of the fans: maximum of 5 points and a minimum of 1 point
