Times are changing

This is staggering.

LeighGenesis?

What?!  How many people will come to watch the team because it’s not Leigh RMI anymore, but LeighGenesis?  How many people will stay away because of the change?  By all means have a rethink about kits, badges, etc – sometimes you do have to move on – but LeighFuggingGenesis?  Please.  What’s next: Accrington Megadrive?

Ha ha ha. I saw this – quite ridiculous. I dare say even the sport they play is negotiable, and before long they’ll be applying to enter the Twenty20 cricket league!!

This reminds me of Albuquerque renaming its minor league baseball team. For a century or so, they were the Albuquerque Dukes [the city is known as The Duke City], but in the 90s they changed the name to the Albuquerque Isotopes — hoping to draw in new fans, evidently those that watched The Simpsons. I kind of lost interest in the club at that point, despite having supported them since 1960.

I remember us playing Leigh RMI a few years back in the Cup. They got a draw at the Cottage (largely thanks to an incredible display from their aging and portly ‘keeper) before we beat them in the return leg. First time I’d heard of RMI and I thought it was a great name. Pleased to see Horwich RMI finally returning to their roots then and effectively “re-claiming” the name.

Let’s just hope Horwich RMI doesn’t rename themselves Horwich Talking Heads.

    But really…Genesis? Why?
