There’s a new mole in town and – if he’s to be believed – we’ve got more good info:
1) Simunic likely
2) We’ve bid £5million or so for Vaclav Sverkos of Czech Republic. He’s the fellow who shinned in the goal that beat Switzerland. This is funny for me because I remember watching that match and visualising him in a Fulham shirt. Really. I have a thing about Czech footballers.
3) Roy has four players he wants to sign, one of whom is likely to be a loan. He has £15 million, so £10 m for Simunic and mystery player 1.
4) Roy is happy with Andreasen and Andranik (hmmm, the And brothers) as defensive midfielders, so won’t be spending there.
5) He’s after a centre-back (Simunic, we think), a right back (?), a left midfielder (?) and a centre-forward (Sverkos, it seems).
6) He is actively trying to shift the squad’s dead wood. We thought that might be hard, didn’t we?
7) The Kitson and Harewood stuff is made up. As predicted, Roy will look to get better value elsewhere. We asked about Darren Bent and ran a mile when Spurs gave us a price. Good that we asked though, eh?
8 – I think that’s it.
[UPDATED TO REFLECT LARGE SQUAD] Possible frequent players:
Schwarzer – various
New RB – Hangeland – Simunic – Konchesky – Hughes…. Omozusi/Leijer/Watts/etc
Davies – Bullard – Murphy – Gera – Andreasen – Andranik- Dempsey – Gera – Proper left winger
Nevland – Healy – Sverkos – Kamara – Johnson
Which says that we’re alright at the back (assuming Simunic is coming), midfield is still crowded (how’s he going to pick four or five out of that lot? Especially if there’s another player coming) and that we have numbers up front but perhaps not the reliable goalscorer/all purpose superstar we want. Still, encouraging enough. Looking at all that I just can’t see a front two season. It does look as though we’ll see either one up or split strikers, the dropping off player being (I presume) Gera (or Dempsey). Who knows though, this is no more than idle speculation.

Yes, a strong XI with some depth as well (Dempsey, Gera, Hughes, etc.).
I’ve always liked Kitson and think he could be useful if the price is right.
The latest reports on Saha are that he wants to stay and fight for his spot at ManU. That said, a loan move would do him some good to get him sharp (especially to a team that’s not playing in Europe). Could he be the loan target, even if it’s only through Dec?

Our forwards are still terrible, with the exception of Kamara when hes at his best.

Hmmm, I know Gera was a free, but in light of the apparent competition for his services, did he really come to the Cottage with the understanding that he would be a bench player?

no, I forgot about him while doing this post!

and thinking about it, he’s got to be wide left or we’re playing 451/4231, right? Given the players we have, the strength is midfield. Far better to do what Spain did last night and play lots of midfielders in an attacking way than sacrifice a good player for the sake of having two forwards. Ah, who knows?

Yeah, I was going to mention Spain’s fortuitous tactical change as well – quality midfielders come a lot cheaper, it seems, than quality forwards. And, unlike Spain (or Arsenal) we don’t have to win every game, so just pinging the ball around for 90 minutes and frustrating the heck out of the (less skillfull) opposition works for me. Though we should still get one real difference maker upfront for when push comes to shove. Don’t know if Sverkos is that man, he had some problems in the Bundesliga before returning to his homeland.

Nazdar Vaclav!

4-2-3-1 as standard choice for most of next season – explains depth of midfield competition , means we don’t have to have an out and out left winger. Would also make Finnan a real asset if we could get him – though that’s looking less likely. Fits with RH technical interests and role.

I still believe we need a big, McBride-esque forward to fight for the headers up front and to lay off to our other strikers. The way the team is shaping up, it’s starting to remind me a little bit of the US MNT: good at the back, a good midfield with many options but no solid, consistent finishers. Although, to be fair, Nevland hasn’t the time on the pitch for me to judge him yet. He could be a real threat.

But as Colin’s showed, forwards score twice as often as a sub, so let’s not get carried away with Nevland.

Never forget Nevland! Roy almost did last season and it nearly cost us dear.

A little bit of talk in the Aussie Press that David Carney might be headed to Fulham
http://theworldgame.sbs.com.au/australia/off-the-pitch-whos-in-and-whos-out-121993/
He’s a left winger who’s been transformed to a left full back at National team level through necessity, in much the same way Brett Emerton was.
His game has come a long long way in the last year and a bit ever since he got a chance at the Asian Cup and then subsequently moved from Sydney to Sheffield United. For some reason he’s not been a regular at Sheffield, which is bizzare given his good form at national team level and the fact every time he’s played for them he’s played very well. He’s got a very nice cross on him and a real nose for when to come inboard and threaten the goal. Has a nice shot on him too! (http://youtube.com/watch?v=Uj0QyNQYH1A). He still has no right foot and is only so so defensively but if he’s being brought in as a left winger then I think it would be a good move for both parties. The way his game has developed in recent times suggests under a manger like Roy he could really step up again.
Only very quiet whispers but worth keeping an eye out
