I just noticed that this:
is a bit like this:
Sort of. Clint put his away without resorting to theatricals. Seriously though, same sort of runs, balls wide, balls in, etc. No real point, but I haven’t got anything else to say.

I don’t care what the reason is, you can post the Dempsey goal as many times as you like and I’ll still crack a smile.
Same with Kamara at City last year…
…next year, I may be saying, “Same with Gera vs. Man Yoo.”

yeah, there’s no getting tired of either of these goals. i’d rather keep seeing them than ever forget about them.

And Gera can be as theatrical as he likes for me, as long as the ball goes in the back of the net. Another similar one was Nevland’s recent one which he tucked away with nonchalance. I suspect if Gera had taken a more traditional approach, it would have been blocked by one of the two ManUre players between him and the goal. He certainly stunned them with the surprise element.

When you see plays like Gera’s, I often wonder, “Did the player have a bad first touch and make the most of it, or did he plan on touching the ball up and over like that?” I’ve seen some players touch a ball up to get a volley where you just knew from their body shape that they meant to get the ball off the ground and into a particular spot for a second touch. In this case, he may have meant to touch it up but it went really high and have a feeling he was just reacting. Either way, nicely done and what an exciting way to put the ball in the back of the net and the final nail in the coffin.

I definitely think it was a dodgy first touch and that he was reacting. But as others have said I couldn’t care in the slightest! Great finish, great goal, and I won’t forget forget it for a long time.

I don’t think Gera is trying to be theatrical; the return pass from Johnson is behind him (the return pass from Rosenior to Dempsey was a bit behind him rather than out in front, thus Dempsey taking the ball a little bit awkwardly on the inside of his right foot, but not as much so), and touching it up and over, rather than turning and trying to get a shot off with his left, is the quickest way to get the ball away before Ferdinand closes him down.
I like the comparison though. Dempsey and Gera are similar in that they have a knack for getting into good scoring positions, and both had the instinct to continue their runs through the middle and the ability to find a little bit of space to receive a return pass. As has been pointed out here, the fact that Gera has been scuffing some of those chances this season doesn’t negate the fact that he’s been getting in position to HAVE chances to score.

here’s two things about the mercurial nature of this sport:
1. Gera has had at least four open looks in front of goal and skied them all. This one was seriously difficult and he converted.
2. With his history of failing to convert, supposing he’d skied this one with a wide-open Kamara to his left. He’d have never heard the end to the boos.
As for technique, in large part it’s what allows you to make a fantastic play when the ball is not delivered to you in its prime location. Who knows, if Johnson had put it in front rather than behind, he might have missed that one also.
Finally, I agree with El Steve and Bill. I’ll never get tired of these two goals.
