Good, perhaps great, news from The Indy:
In the previous two seasons, Wenger has said that the club must sell a player every year to help service the annual £24m payments on the Emirates Stadium. He has sold Thierry Henry and Alexander Hleb – both to Barcelona – over the last two seasons and the evidence suggests that a further sale will be in order this year if he is to continue financing the club.
That should be relatively simple with Emmanuel Adebayor’s departure more than likely after his growing disenchantment and poor performances. However, it seems that Wenger, who spent £15m on Andrei Arshavin in January, will once again have to come up with a cut-price alternative to the Togo striker. The slightly cryptic interview given in France over the weekend may just have been the Arsenal manager hinting at his unhappiness.
Wenger also had to endure a rough ride from Arsenal supporters at last week’s shareholders’ forum. It is understood the Arsenal board has always sought to keep to the line that there is money available to spend on players because it is concerned that disillusionment among fans would strengthen the hand of Alisher Usmanov, the Uzbek billionaire who owns 25 per cent of the club and has promised large investment in the past.
Kroenke, who owns sport franchises in America including the NBA’s Denver Nuggets, owns 28.3 per cent of the club having bought shares from Fiszman and the Carr family, the latter last month. He endorses Fiszman’s view that the club can survive without a major benefactor and Wenger himself has rallied against what he perceives as “financial doping”.
However, the Arsenal manager is now facing his most severe financial restraints. The midfielder Samir Nasri, signed last summer by Wenger, said yesterday that there was “no question” of his manager leaving. Nasri said: “I know that he still has a project for two years and he is counting on allowing Arsenal to rediscover its glorious past.”
Huzzah. Not for Arsenal, or for the good of English football, but for us in our quest to hang onto Brede Hangeland.
Our possible European qualification may move the goalposts slightly, but good sources reckon that Fulham are expecting to have to deal with some pretty persuasive bids for Hangeland over the summer. The thinking is that we’ll do what we can to keep him, but if a big club comes in with a silly offer it’s going to be hard to say no. Now, we can all gnash our teeth and complain about not having ambition and being a selling club, but in the really real world things aren’t that simple and if a player gets an offer to improve his career and if a club gets offered serious money that player’s probably on his way. You’d hope that with Hangeland and Hodgson things might be different, but we can’t really know.
The point of all this is that I’d assumed Arsenal to be a bidder. Never have I seen a club who need a centre-back so badly, and the fact(s) that Hangeland is road tested, not frightened of having the ball at his feet, of a cerebral bent and (most importantly) of sufficient quality, had made me assume that Arsene would be lurking around Roy’s office as soon as the season finishes with a blank cheque, a nice bottle of wine and a Balzac first edition.
But perhaps not. If Arsenal have no money I can rest easy. Manchester United don’t need Hangeland; Chelsea wouldn’t happen; Liverpool would be interesting and the other club I worry about, but would he play regularly there? That just brings us down to Villa, who would surely want him, Man City, who could offer money but little else, and Spurs, who will surely ask (Hangeland was dominant in our win over Spurs at the Cottage) but will surely be told “no”. The latter clubs aren’t really a big enough step up to justify leaving the good thing we have here anyway. So perhaps we’re safe after all.
Two more things:
Adam’s got some more good stuff up at This is American Soccer. One of my ideas is to form some sort of inner-city football world. I have no idea how this might be pulled off, but I like the look of this Pier 40 place.
Also, great forgotten albums of recent years: Screaming Trees, Dust. This is from about 1996, which I remember well because Hade and I had just got together and (she) drove all the way to Glasgow for T-In The Park, where we saw all kinds of great music and had lots of noodles tipped on our tent while we slept. I listened to this album a lot at the time. Music and memories, eh?

Firstly there is money to spend at Arsenal and Hangeland will be wearing an Arsenal shirt next season, FACT!!!
Secondly I live two doors away from mr wenger and I saw hangeland and his agent enter wengers plush house. FACT!!!
The player and His agent have already held talks with Arsene Wenger at his house as they sat down over a meal and glass of wine, negotiated and discussed personal terms for the player. The fee for the player was quoted at £7-10m pound. I actually like Fulham and I feel that this is good business for fulham as they can use the money to buy a new centre back, Roy is the right man at fulham and I can see him bringing in another quality centre back to replace hangeland!! But the bottom line is that he can’t refuse champions league football and he will represent Arsenal next season!

I’m hopeful that my neighbours two doors down don’t know what we discuss at dinner and what we eat and drink. But who knows.

This popped up on the Arsenal newsnow and I felt the need to comment. Yes it may seem that Wenger has more limited amount of cash than first thought, but as we all know he has never been a big spender, and if he ever needs the money to buy an expansive player I’m sure the board wouldn’t stand in his way. The Arshavin deal is evidence of that. And even though many feel that the Gunners are in need of a big and strong no non-sense center half I don’t think Hangeland would fit in. I’m not saying that he is a bad player, quite the opposite, Hangeland has been one of Premiership’s best defenders this season, but I just can’t imagine him in the Arsenal defence. I think he would make mistakes in the Wenger back four and the reason for that is our defensive line always stands high up the pitch. This is one of the reasons that Senderos generally made a lot of mistakes, he didn’t have the pace. One of the reasons that Hangeland has been such a success in the Fulham defence is that he relies on his strengths; jumping and heading ability, tackling and strength, but he also never gets into situations where his weaknesses are revealed.
So I really hope that Hangeland signs a new contract and stays at Fulham because I admire what Roy Hodgson has accomplished with his team and non the least your club’s values and style.
Proud to be a Gooner :-)

this is very interesting, and a fine point about hiding his weaknesses – this is exactly what we’ve seen, both in terms of being well protected (our midfielders have been very cautious all year) and well hidden (we’re coached very well, and as you say, he’s rarely put in a position where speed is needed).
The speed thing is interesting. Hangeland’s not slow as such, but lacks burners. Aaron Hughes, it might be added, outran Gabby Agbonlahor at Villa Park earlier in the season… the pair of them work well together.
but yes, thanks for the comments, very interesting. I must write more Arsenal posts…

A great contribution and very interesting counter point Gooner. It does carry a lot of sense.

Bah, question for all:
Has Arsene made a move in the past 2-3 years where we’ve said “Yep, thats exactly what they need”?
No.
Hence Brede is not going to Arsenal.

Pier 40 is great, and so are many of the other public fields in NYC (I am playing on one of them tonight). May my inner Dickson Etuhu come out.

The figures I have seen is a 13 million pound allocation for transfers plus whatever he gets for players that are sold. Adebayor seems unhappy and the negotiations with Van Persie seem stalled. He could get a lot of money for either or both but then would have to spend some of it on bringing in a new forward.
Hangeland is a good target, but I wonder if he would be more exposed in Arsenal’s attack oriented style. Maybe that is why the gossip papers are also saying that Wenger is looking at Vermaelen at Ajax. If he really doesn’t want to spend money, then Onyewu at Standard. Both have Champions League experience.

Not sure if anything is going to happen with Hangeland but the speculation in the first chapter is way off. Arsenal makes tens of millions in profit every year, AFTER payments for the stadium. I remember the article a year or so ago that is the “source” of that information, an article that was (once again) proven to be based on misquotes and false information.
Another question is a) how much of that money is available for transfers and b) even if it available, would Wenger want to use it. I would very much like to see Hangeland in Arsenal shirt but I’m not at all convinced that Wenger sees that in the same way. Nevertheless, as a Fulham fan I would be worried: you have got a very solid and proven player in Brede and it will be difficult to hold on to him. Still, if he doesn’t come to Arsenal, I surely hope he is staying in Fulham!

Intersting comments from Gooner and didier. Hangeland is a great player but I suspect that Wenger will be doing business with Newcastle for a centre back rather than Fulham.

Pier 40 is the shit. I just wish there were less youth teams with permits.
Hangeland has said time and time again he’s happy at Fulham. He’s going to be playing European football next season and is much more comfortable at Craven Cottage than he would ever be at the Emirates.

I expect Wenger to have a lot of money to spend this summer…after he takes the Madrid job;)
timmyg hit the nail right on the head. Wenger does things his own way.

I haven’t played at Pier 40….but last year I had a shop named Gotham Scenic build a set for me and they happen to be based out of Pier 40. I turned the corner on my first shop visit and saw all the splendor of the Pier 40 fields. My first thought was….why didn’t anyone tell me this was here!? Is it a secret club? Manhattan holds so many mysteries around each corner, it’s impossible to keep up.

I think it’s inevitable that if a Champions League team want a player and are willing to pay top money that they’ll get him.
From our point of view I can’t see Hangeland going anywhere as a squad player and if one of the big 4 have mega money to buy one of the world’s best central defenders I wonder if Brede necessarily stands out.
He’s 27, hasn’t played yet for a major club and has thrived in an ultra defensive system where his midfielders concentrate on protecting the defence.
What would disppoint me enormously is if we didn’t offer him the sort of contract that would match what the likes of Villa or Spurs might pay.

While Hangeland has said on more than one occasion that he’s happy at Fulham, and while I personally would of course be thrilled to see him stay, I don’t think we can dismiss the possibility that he’s saying the appropriate things given the situation but is still willing to consider other offers if they came his way. As happy as he very well may be, he’d nonetheless be silly not to consider it if Arsenal were to make him an offer.
From what I’ve heard, Liverpool fans aren’t thrilled with their center back situation either. Carragher is no longer young (though, to be fair, still an excellent player), Hyppia is over the hill, and (the impression I have is that) they think Agger, Degen and Skrtel aren’t good enough. I don’t necessarily think this means Benitez will be shopping, but I don’t think it’s inconceivable either.
Spurs are an interesting case because they’ve got something of a surplus of talent in a number of areas, likely won’t be playing in Europe next year so don’t need extra squad depth for that (no assumptions here, of course), and there seems to be a mutual respect between Roy and Harry that I guess could potentially lead to a deal being brokered.
