I forgot to say: word is that Middlesbrough’s Gary O’Neill will be a Fulham player before long. This hasn’t really been in the press, but someone mentioned it on TiFF and on further prompting it seems that this is pretty much going to happen (the poster has an impeccable source for this info).
The idea is the O’Neill is a good ‘tweener player, not someone who’s going to command an automatic starting place, but who will be able do make a significant contribution as needed. I remember Roy talking about this at last year’s fans’ forum, how he had various ideas for backup players but to get players who are of sufficient quality you need to promise them first team roles, and you can’t do this if you’re happy with what you have, so you have something of a dilemma on your hands. Having said this, we’ve had a good season now and are in Europe, so attracting players should be a bit easier.
Anyway, O’Neill’s a good player and can plug into the midfield as needed so will be a good signing.

Can’t complain with us buying a player who is basically a carbon copy of Simon Davies. Being seen as very handy cover (at the very least) for both Davies and Murphy you’d expect. Although it’s not outside of the realms of possibility that he’d get in the side alongside Murphy in the middle or on the right with Davies switched left. So, while not a totally thrilling signing, he’s pretty much just what we need in a European season, and redresses the lack of midfield depth that we had once we sold Bullard. And as such I imagine he’d get more than enough playing time to be satisfied. O’Neil and someone a hell of a lot better than Julian Gray to challenge Dempsey on the left and our midfield will be basically set.

I always thought that O’Neil was more of a central midfielder than on the right or the left, but he’s probably versatile enough to play any where in midfield. From what I’ve seen of him, he’s a good passer who isn’t afraid to tackle.
I agree, he would be a good squad player to have if the price is right.

IMO we need a striker willing to put in a serious shift but with goals in him and whatever money is available should be concentrated on that.
We can’t buy the finished article though so whoever comes in will be something of a risk. That though is what we need.
Other than that it’s bodies who can play up to Prem level so as to provide cover. Ideally young enough to improve and challenge for their place the way that Clint did with Gera.
The likes of O’Neil and Aliadiere seem to me to be ideal squad filler.
