    Can’t throw any light on Unlucky Fish (could he be a forbear of Billy the Fish?).

    The Northern Union was, I think, the name given to the group of rugby clubs in Lancashire and Yorkshire who broke away from the Rugby Football Union over the issue of broken time payments (compensation for loss of normal earnings), i.e. the founder members of Rugby League.
